If you’re looking to do business in more than one market, a multilingual site is no longer a nice-to-have in 2023. While it’s true that English dominates the internet, you might be surprised to learn it makes up just 25% of languages spoken online.
Although you may have covered your local, regional, or even national markets with a monolingual website, translating your content is the key to expanding into new international markets. Languages such as Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, and French are increasingly growing online and offer big market opportunities.
A translated website is especially important for businesses selling goods or services online. A full 75% of people surveyed about why language matters on global websites admitted an obvious preference to shopping online in their native language, and 60% of people rarely, or never, buy on English-only websites.
So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at the options for adding a language to your Webflow website.
How to make your Webflow website multilingual
In Webflow, you have a few options for bringing multi-language capabilities to your website. Let’s explore them.
1. Duplicate websites and pages
Search in the Webflow forum for multilingual options and you’ll likely come across the concept of duplicating your website or creating multiple pages. While this solution can work well for very small websites, with a small word count, it’s still a time-consuming process and can be a bit tedious.
You can duplicate collection items though static pages. The way this solution works is to take all your website pages, duplicate them, and then create folders for each language. However, creating duplicate pages or websites requires duplicate work as you’ll be adding and managing multiple pages as well as your original website. This is why some users may not favor this way of creating a multilingual website.
Consider the length of time it takes to manage your primary website — every time you update content in the original version of your website, you’ll need to update your duplicate pages as well.
If you create duplicate websites, you can create language subdirectories. But you’ll likely be penalized by search engines if you don’t add hreflang tags. These tags tell Google about pages that are similar in content but target different languages, as it will be considered duplicate content. You’ll need to add hreflang tags to your pages manually.
The second downside of this process is that in addition to creating duplicate pages, you will have to take care of translating the content of your website. You’ll need to work with a translator if you don’t speak the language you want to add. Then, you’ll have to manually add the translated content to your site.
2. Use the Weglot integration

Step 1: create your account
Create an account on Weglot. This is the place where you’ll be able to manage and edit your translations.
Step 2: adding your project
You’ll then be prompted to add your domain name, the original language of your site, and the languages you want to add.
(Note: If you’re using a temporary Webflow domain name, use this integration or wait until you’ve added a custom domain.)

Step 3: configuring your DNS records
Create your subdomains by configuring your DNS records. This can be done in your domain name provider account. Look for your DNS tab and create a new CNAME entry.

Add the language code of the language you’re adding in Name, and in Data, add websites.wegot.com. Then click Check DNS.

Step 4: adding custom code in Webflow
Copy and paste the JavaScript snippet provided in your Weglot account. Then go to your Webflow admin area under Settings → Custom Code. Go to Head Code and paste the Weglot code to your <head> tag.

Step 5: save and publish
Save and publish your changes. That’s all there is to it — you’ll now have a multilingual Webflow website.

You need to think about these key components when choosing a translation solution for your website.
