Hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS)

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a secure protocol facilitating encrypted exchanges of information between web browsers and servers. It applies Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption technology to verify a website’s identity and create an encrypted connection.

Websites that handle sensitive information, such as passwords and banking information, use HTTPS to ensure only the intended recipient can read sensitive data. For example, when you make online purchases, web browsers securely send your credit card information to servers via HTTPS.

Without HTTPS, anyone accessing the server’s network can read the transmitted information. This access allows third parties to intercept data, resulting in cybercrime such as identity theft and fraud.

Maintaining website security prevents hackers and bad actors from infiltrating your site. Learn how to troubleshoot site security issues to protect you and your users against cyber threats.
