Frequently asked questions
With Webflow Localization, you can fully customize your site for global audiences — everything from styles and imagery to dynamic CMS content, and more — in a visual-first way, with or completely without code. This makes it radically faster to ship truly localized sites — as opposed to ground-up custom engineering solutions which are costly, time-intensive, and can be brittle to maintain.
When it comes to translation, Localization provides maximum flexibility and composability. You can leverage our native AI-powered translation as a first pass, then manually perfect them. Or you can leverage your translation management system (TMS) of choice through our native integrations with market leading solutions —including Smartling, Crowdin, Lokalise, Transperfect, Phrase, and many more — or build your own integration using our Localization APIs.
When it comes to maximizing your global visibility and discoverability —Webflow offers best practices in publishing your localized content. This includes customizable locale subdirectories, automatic site visitor routing, a customizable “locale selector” element, localized URLs, localized SEO titles and descriptions — and then has built-in analytics and optimization so you can make sure you’re serving up your highest converting content.
Finally, Localization allows you to natively host and manage all of your localized sites in Webflow —as opposed to third party proxy-based solutions. This means:
- Increased reliability of site performance
- It's easier to scale as your business and site grows
- Reduced security risks
- Single escalation path; time saved on troubleshooting should issues arise
Webflow Localization allows you to customize every visual aspect of your site for each locale, including styles, images, alt text, and element visibility. You can replace images entirely for specific locales (useful when images contain text), localize alt text for accessibility without changing the image itself, or show/hide specific elements based on regional relevance.
To customize visuals, select your desired locale from the Locale view dropdown, then modify images through Element settings or manage alt text globally through the Assets panel. These changes only affect the selected locale, giving you complete control over how your site appears to different audiences.
Webflow automatically implements SEO best practices for your localized sites without additional configuration. The platform generates HTML lang tags, page-level hreflang tags in the section, and includes hreflang tags in auto-generated sitemaps to help search engines understand your locale relationships.
Each locale gets customizable subdirectories to maintain domain authority, and you can localize meta titles, descriptions, and Open Graph settings for each page. Enterprise and Advanced plans also include automatic domain-level routing to direct visitors to their preferred language based on browser settings. Plus, there are granular and scalable features like linking Collection items across locales with CSV import and setting individual pages to draft status in specific locales.
Webflow provides native localization tools alongside flexible integration options for your preferred workflow. You can use built-in machine translation for rapid content localization, create custom translation glossaries for consistent terminology, and manually edit translations for precision.
Webflow also connects with the top translation management systems like Smartling, Lokalise, Phrase, Transperfect, and more through vetted Webflow Apps along with flexible APIs to connect to others. You can also build locale switchers that let visitors choose their preferred language.
Webflow Localization provides an end-to-end solution that lets you design, build, and customize localized sites directly in the design canvas. You can switch between locales to preview and edit each version, customize both static pages and CMS content, and localize images with region-specific alt text.
The platform offers machine-powered translation for quick initial localization, then allows manual refinement for accuracy. With features like localized URLs in subdirectories (such as .com/es/), auto-generated sitemaps with hreflang tags, and customizable locale selectors, you maintain strong SEO while delivering personalized experiences to each market.
