Gamut

Color gamut describes the full range of colors a device can reproduce on its display. Each screen displays different color amounts based on its gamut. Different devices, like monitors, cameras, and smartphones, each have unique color gamuts influenced by their design and capabilities.

Color gamut is typically represented in a three-dimensional color space, where each distinct color has unique coordinates. This visualization helps developers and designers present colors accurately in web design and digital displays.

The most common color standards include:

  • sRGB (standard Red-Green-Blue) — popular in web design
  • AdobeRGB — favored in print media
  • DCI-P3 (Digital Cinema Initiatives – Protocol 3) popular in digital cinema
  • NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) American standard for broadcasting
  • EBU (European Broadcasting Union) European standard for broadcasting
