To provide customers with a better long term payments solution and free up our engineering resources for core product improvement, we’re phasing out Client Billing by early 2023, and all customers using Client Billing will need to transition their clients to an external billing service for collecting recurring payments. As part of this process, Customer Support will also end support for Client Billing related issues in July 2022.
To make the transition easier, we’ve partnered with our friends at the freelancer payments and client management platform Bonsai, who are offering current Client Billing users 50% off their first year of Bonsai.
Why we’re making this change
When we released Client Billing in 2016, we wanted to create an easier way for freelancers and agencies to onboard their clients and manage ongoing costs as they hosted their sites in Webflow. A relatively simple feature, Client Billing allowed you to charge clients directly for recurring Site plan payments and even tack on a margin to make a profit each month.
And while this feature has made some of our customers lives’ easier, it’s not been a perfect solution for all. We know this because we’ve seen many feature requests come in specifically around Client Billing for improvements like new billing options, improved reporting and receipts, and also bug fixes for issues our support team has needed to step in and resolve.
As we’ve attempted to balance these requests and issues alongside our core feature work, we’ve also had to perform considerable ongoing maintenance to keep pace with changes on Stripe’s side (the service that powers Client Billing under the hood). Amidst this context, Client Billing has not received the improvements our customers deserve, and has repeatedly consumed engineering resources that could be used for core Designer and CMS improvements.
With these challenges in mind, as we considered the best path forward for our customers using Client Billing along with the many feature requests we’ve received to improve this feature, we looked for a partner service that could do everything Client Billing offered and much more — and we’re thrilled to report that we’ve partnered with freelancer payments and client management platform Bonsai to provide our customers an alternative with more features and capabilities than Client Billing ever offered. (Details on this partnership below.)
