Latency

Network latency is the time data needs to travel from one point to another, impacting the responsiveness and speed of web applications and services. It’s typically measured in milliseconds (ms) between the originating device and the server. 

Low latency facilitates data transfer with negligible delay, while high latency results in slow response times, long webpage load times, and a less fluid user experience. Influencing factors for latency include the physical distance between users and the server, the efficiency of the internet connection, and the processing capabilities. 

For example, consider a server in Los Angeles, USA, sending a file to a server in Tokyo, Japan. If the American server delivers the packet at 12:30:00.000 CST and it arrives at its destination at 12:30:00.120 CST, the latency is the time difference — 0.120 seconds or 120 milliseconds.

Web designers and developers can minimize latency by reducing file sizes, using cache techniques, and optimizing other aspects of their web design. By reducing latency, web applications provide faster and more responsive interactions, enhancing user satisfaction and engagement.
