Since 2013, Funsize, a digital experience design agency, has been bringing its future-forward design perspective to businesses of all shapes and sizes, from fast-moving startups to heavy-hitters like Volvo, PayPal, and Electronic Arts. To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, Funsize wanted to revamp its website, and started searching for a tool that would enable them to work quickly, stay agile, and build it themselves.
Without a traditional development team, Funsize needed a solution that was friendly to nontechnical users to ensure their in-house designers could build robust prototypes and design systems that not only met their own web needs, but also wow-ed their clients. “Webflow forms a strong bridge between design and development,” says Senior Product Designer Dina Williams. “Our designers now understand how things are built, and create more thoughtful, responsive, and playful designs.”
Drawn to the customizability of Webflow, Funsize’s teams are no longer bound by their design files, allowing them to extend their creativity to just about anything — and build web experiences twice as fast.
Building an engaging podcast experience app in 5 days
When you’re experimenting and creating something, you don’t want to be locked into a template — so the fact that Webflow allows custom code and ways for you to modify or integrate with other tools is fantastic.
Recently, the Funsize marketing team asked their Head of Design, Lee Brenner, and his team to come up with a way to make a segment of the company’s podcast, The Funsize Show, more engaging. To do this, they set about to create an app called “Topic Picker,” which randomly selects questions to ask its guests and recreates a game show experience.
Lee’s team saw Webflow not just as a way to speed up their website workflow, but also extend into apps and interactive experiences. They created a workflow between the no-code environment of Webflow and the full-code environment of VS Code to allow Dina to focus on creating the user experience for the app, while Lee focused on the backend and hooking up the API. They also used Webflow to power the front end of their user app interface, connecting Webflow directly to Back4App to power their internal application, which allowed them to work concurrently and test out ideas in real time.
To ensure the app experience was engaging, both the aesthetic and overall experience were equally important. Lee’s team relied heavily on interactions, and loved how easy it was to create complex animation and custom code in Webflow. The app experience was a success, with the marketing team seamlessly incorporating it into the podcast in a fun and playful way. Building the Topic Picker app so quickly allowed the Funsize team to continue to innovate and move on to other projects, like creating another prototype that allows designers to view their design skill distribution in the form of a spider graph. “Webflow really ramps up the speed, design, and quality in our development process,” says Lee.
Paving an innovative path forward with less resources
Because Webflow is accessible to people with little or no prior technical experience, we’ve grown our agency sustainably with the in-house designers we have, as opposed to relying on traditional developers.
Funsize’s new website celebrating its 10-year milestone is currently in the design phase, and the team is looking forward to bringing it to life with Webflow in the coming months. “We’re transforming our company’s vision and strategic mission to prepare us for the next 10 years, and Webflow is at the forefront of our design service offerings,” says Lee.
With Webflow, Funsize is able to make quick changes, like updating content, that allow them to align with client needs. Integrations like Zapier create workflows to help with lead generation, empowering teams to embrace efficiency and unlock more time to focus on deeper work. Forging the need to hire developers, Funsize can give their designers the room they need to unleash their creative potential.
With clients asking for everything from a design refresh of marketing landing pages to a complete CMS platform migration, Funsize has unlocked the magic of saying yes to everything. With Webflow, Funsize can scale with confidence and exceed client expectations with less resources.
