For many Australians, a simple blood test is the first step toward answers, reassurance, or a plan to heal. Behind these routine tests is Healius, Australia’s second-largest provider of pathology services. With over 2,000 collection centers nationwide, Healius processes 57 million tests annually, delivering essential information to both patients and clinicians.
Healius’ suite of websites play a vital role in increasing search engine visibility, encouraging walk-ins, enabling future appointment bookings for specialized tests, and providing resources such as consumables and vaccines for doctors. They also act as a destination for reliable information for both patients and healthcare providers, tailored to each Australian state.
Healius’ digital team supports the company’s 10,000-strong workforce. Previously on WordPress, Product Manager Stéphane Recouvreur was highly dependent on developers, and even the smallest edits required complicated and duplicative work across sites. To amplify their online presence and streamline web operations, Healius needed a solution that would allow them to grow with confidence.
Why Healius sought a more powerful website experience
With Webflow, we cut costs and frustrating processes. Our marketing team can now make changes to the website themselves, with safeguards in place to maintain safety while expediting workflows, which has saved us so much time.
- Stéphane Recouvreur, Product Manager, Healius
Before transitioning to Webflow, Healius’ web team felt stifled by their WordPress set-up. Their developer-dependent web processes required engaging a third-party agency to handle plugins, servers, and hosting. This not only added unnecessary complexity, but often delayed basic updates by weeks, making it difficult to maintain consistency across multiple sites. “With WordPress, users need to really know how to navigate the system, which isn’t easy for many people,” says Stéphane.
Security concerns further highlighted the need for a more robust, reliable platform. “Before Webflow, access to the website was very limited for others in the company,” says Stéphane. “Any change required someone to email us with their requests, and then our web team would need to prioritize it against other tasks.”
Healius migrated their entire site from WordPress to Webflow in 6 weeks, sparking a new era of efficiency and collaboration. By eliminating developer reliance and optimizing resources, Healius achieved a 3x in cost savings, alongside a 20% decrease in CMS and hosting expenses and thousands each month on development costs.
Reliable uptime and robust security were top priorities to ensure their healthcare information was both accessible and protected. “Security features have also been a major upgrade from WordPress, alleviating the burden of managing plugin updates and hosting maintenance,” says Stéphane. “With Webflow, we can meet the security team’s standards without constant intervention.”
Faster speed-to-market with streamlined content management
Webflow Libraries have made our web design process so much more efficient. We can design a component once and reuse it across all other sites, ensuring brand consistency across our web surfaces.
- Stéphane Recouvreur, Product Manager, Healius
Healius’ digital presence isn’t limited to a single brand; instead, they tailor their online experience for each state which posed a significant challenge: Even minor updates required manually recreating components or copying and pasting across each site.
By leveraging Webflow Libraries, they’ve streamlined the process, creating design components and variables once and managing them from their centralized workspace for all 11 websites. This efficiency upgrade has freed up countless hours and simplified site management across the board.
Webflow’s collaboration tools, like commenting and edit mode, allow Stéphane to bring in team members from marketing and operations, creating a more collaborative workflow. “If we were to do that in WordPress, we would need third-party plugins or some workaround,” he says. “The fact that everything is built into Webflow, and I can assign specific sites to certain people, is absolutely perfect.” This is especially crucial for time-sensitive content, such as stock market announcements, where changes now take minutes instead of weeks. Previously, publishing a single landing page could take weeks or months. Now, Healius makes over 100 changes a day, a transformation that’s supercharged their agility.
Allowing Healius to swap out content within each instance and add flexibility to their site’s design, component slots make it easy to build modular components. “Slots are so valuable: Instead of creating multiple separate variations of the same component, we now only create a single one” says Stéphane.
To efficiently manage complex pages with data-driven visibility settings, Healius uses Collections. For example, on one website, they display information for 250 medical tests simultaneously. Previously, they’d have to create a template and manually recreate the page 250 times. “With Collections, anyone can drop a CSV file into the Collection, and it will automatically create all 250 pages,” says Stéphane. “Replicating this in WordPress would have been more complex, if not impossible.” The ability to cross-reference Collections makes it easy to categorize and access medical tests across various categories, further simplifying the management process.
And whenever Healius has questions, help is an email or chat away. “The Webflow support team has been invaluable for quickly debugging issues, and having a dedicated Enterprise account team allows us to add new features to our stack—like libraries, variables, and slots—which ultimately improves our process, saves us time, and ensures we’re getting the most out of the platform,” says Stéphane.
Scaling digital impact to keep Australians informed and healthy
Webflow has been a game-changer for us: We’re now an agile team that can design the websites we want. We cut costs and reallocated our developers to more critical tasks.
— Stéphane Recouvreur, Product Manager, Healius
With the initial migration complete, Healius now leverages Webflow to manage a growing library of educational content, including blogs and resources. The next step is to empower the marketing team by assigning roles and permissions, enabling them to edit existing content independently while the core digital team focuses on building new experiences.
This new operating model ensures both efficient content management and room to continuously iterate and optimize. “The fact we now have a shared library of components allows us to look at a new redesign across 11 websites with confidence. With any other platform, this would have been quite a hindrance to consider,” says Stéphane.
Healius is also prioritizing a bigger digital transformation by shedding legacy processes, like collecting payments over the phone. “We’re excited to bring payments online with Webflow,” says Stéphane. Just a few months ago, medical information was still being stored in PDFs, but this is now handled digitally thanks to Webflow, marking a significant step for Healius toward a fully digital, scalable web presence.
